The University of Canterbury’s Vice-Chancellor Rod Carr upset at least a few folks when he called international full-fee paying students “a valuable revenue stream and source of talent and diversity” in his opinion piece in The Press on 14 January 2016. One person’s letter to the editor two days later commented that they wish their international student friends were not referred to as money first and talent second, and that they hope UC does not become so obsessed with being a viable business that it smothers the humanity of its students. In playing the numbers game, it may be too late for that already.
